Fiber and Weight Management

As part of a weight loss program with restricted calorie intake and exercise, increasing fiber intake may also assist in weight management.

Studies have shown fiber supplements to enhance weight loss with a low calorie diet. As explained in an HCF Nutrition Foundation Article, "High fiber diets act mechanically, physiologically and chemically to decrease hunger and enhance between meal satiety. Both soluble and insoluble fiber may contribute to weight control. Soluble fiber slows gastric emptying, decreases mixing of foods and digestive enzymes in the small intestine, and is readily fermented to short-chain fatty acids in the colon. Insoluble fiber accelerates passage of food into the colon, decreases digestion time of foods, physically prevents interaction between digestive enzymes and nutrients, and produces a fullness throughout the gastrointestinal tract." "A generous supply of Konsyl shakers/samples arrived safe and sound at the VA Clinic in Colorado Springs. I thank you. Currently I recommend the product well diluted in juice for the standard indications and as part of a weight reduction program. I see a lot of overweight diabetics with lipid problems and Konsyl tends to "bulk up" the stomach and cut the appetite with little caloric intake. Of course it also helps to eat less (smaller portions) and leave something on the plate. A liberal water intake is helpful.

Again, thanks." -David L. Smith, M.D.
