Stuff the turkey, not yourself

Thanksgiving is often a four-day-weekend of feasting. Thursday's leftovers can stretch through to Sunday. If you are hosting the meal, you want to be generous. If you are a guest, you want to be gracious. Here are tips for host and guest.

As the host, prepare healthier alternatives. When guests arrive mix these high-fiber, non-alcoholic drink cocktails. For hors d'oeuvres, put out raw vegetables, like carrots, celery, radishes, fennel and red pepper strips. Remove the skin from the turkey. Serve whole-grain breads and pastas. Use non-fat or low-fat salad dressings. There is nothing wrong with serving pie for dessert, but also offer your guests a fresh fruit alternative.

As the guest, eat something light before attending a party. Drink plenty of water before and during meals to help you feel full. Take smaller portions as platters are being passed around the table. If you are still hungry, you can always take a second helping. Stop eating before you reach that "stuffed" feeling. Don't feel as if you have to clean your plate. Thanksgiving can be a day of good health.
