More reasons to be smoke free

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is the fourth leading cause of death in America. Smoking is the primary risk factor, but second-hand smoke, air pollution and work hazards (dust and chemicals) also present risks. This fact sheet explains that COPD refers to two lung diseases: chronic bronchitis and emphysema. These diseases are characterized by obstruction to airflow that interferes with normal breathing. More women than men die from the disease.

There are many ways to treat COPD, including medications, exercise and diet. One study published in the American Journal of Epidemiology showed that greater intake of dietary fiber (including apples, bananas, apricots, prunes, strawberries and watermelon) may protect against deterioration of lung function, and possibly against COPD.
