Stay In Shape Through The Holidays

The winter holiday season is one filled with dinners, open houses and office parties. Buffet tables are crammed with sweets, alcohol and other high-calorie foods and beverages, so it is no surprise that we gain weight. To enjoy the holidays without the extra pounds, approach these get-togethers with a strategy that balances sensible eating and exercise.

Here are some tips and ideas:

  • When you are in front of a buffet, choose one food to indulge in and make it good. Pick something you only get during the holidays. After all, you can have chips and dip any old time.
  • Choose a small sized plate if there is a choice. You will  put less food on a salad plate than a dinner plate.
  • After you've served yourself, walk away from the table. It's better to talk with guests away from the food rather than be standing next to the table and be tempted to eat more.
  • Select healthier options, like lean turkey without gravy; fresh fruit rather than cake, and sparkling water with a lemon or lime wedge rather than alcohol.
  • Exercise wherever you can. Park at the edge of the mall so you have a longer walk to the entrance.
  • Walk around the neighborhood with friends to look at holiday decorations.
  • Play football before the big holiday meal.
  • Plan contests with the kids to see who can run the farthest or who can do the most push-ups.
  • Place your workout shoes on the floor next to your bed so you can step right into them when you wake up.
